Dear Wellpoint,

According to a recent Reuters article, you have been targeting women who have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and finding reasons to drop their coverage.

Though the new health care reform law will make the insurance industry practice of rescissions illegal this year, we believe that you should immediately stop this practice. Women’s health should not be reduced to a self-serving insurance company equation designed to weed out women who need coverage.

National Cancer Institute estimates show that, based on current rates, more than 12 percent of women born today—one in eight—will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in their lives. Getting breast cancer should never put a woman at risk at losing her health insurance coverage.

Sincerely,
